I’VE LONG TOLD ARTISTS TO STOP WASTING TIME ON ETSY, SOCIETY6, AND EVEN NICER SITES LIKE SAATCHI.
Someone will come to me asking how to get more sales or followers on one of these sites and my response will be to completely change the goal and move away from these sites.
Because they aren’t designed to be able to market your artwork for you. There are usually far more artists than customers & fans on each site. So the competition is high and the demand is low. And many of the buyers don’t actually buy or don’t buy very often, preferring just to browse.
And if the site isn’t doing the marketing for you, you have to be the one to bring customers there.
But you can only do so much marketing by yourself.
So it’s best if all those marketing efforts all point to one place so that they compound upon each other and have more massive effects.
When you spread that marketing out over two, three, five, ten sites… I’ve seen artists sign up for every art site they run across in hopes that one of them will be the magic bullet that makes them loads of sales.
But instead, all that marketing is just a tiny drop in the bucket for each of the sites, amounting to an almost unnoticeable impact. So disappointing!
Sure, you could choose one of these sites to be the place you point all your marketing.
BUT THESE SITES ARE DESIGNED TO KEEP PEOPLE ON THE SITE – NOT NECESSARILY LOOKING AT YOUR WORK.
So your portfolio on this site could actually be encouraging people to look at other artists’ work, which is absolutely a waste of your marketing time. You want most people who see your artwork to stick around in some way – maybe they follow you on social media, or they might sign up for your email list, or they could even make a purchase right then. You don’t want them looking around at other art and forgetting about yours.
And those are the reasons I recommend you have your own website where you drive all of your marketing efforts, with very few exceptions.
It gives you so much more control to send traffic to the one spot and be able to keep them around on that site that it’s not worth all the time it takes to add pieces to each site. You could use that time to market your website instead!
But I’m so excited to announce a tool that will turn this concept on its head!
If you could post to these art sharing sites quickly and still do most of your marketing to your own website, then those sites aren’t a waste of time (since you’re not spending much time on them) and whatever new website traffic, fans, or sales they bring is just a great bonus. Right?
THAT WOULD BE EPIC…
AND NOW IT’S ABOUT TO BE REAL!
This month, ArtSquare is launching a new product that lets you instantly publish your artwork to all the platforms that you choose with one click.
They like to say its “one portfolio to rule them all” and I can’t say I disagree. If you’re on certain website builders, you can actually do this within your normal process of uploading new art to your website. So it can literally take you no extra time at all!
As you upload artwork, you’ll have switches to turn on and off publishing that piece to each platform you’ve connected to your ArtSquare account.
Best part? When an original sells on any platform, ArtSquare notifies you and automatically marks the piece sold on all the other platforms too.
Since this is a brand new tool, they’re really open to feedback right now (meaning you can ask for your favorite platforms to be added if they aren’t already integrated with ArtSquare).
AND WHEN I ASKED THEM TO GIVE YOU ALL A SPECIAL GIFT, THEY WERE MORE THAN HAPPY TO GIVE YOU YOUR FIRST MONTH FREE!
You can sign up right now over here and when they are ready to launch you’ll move off the waiting list and get a month free to test them out. (psst – it’s also really affordable after the free month if you want to keep using it!)
So while I still recommend you use all your marketing for your own website, it can’t hurt to have your art automatically posting to other art sharing sites where it might get seen and even purchased by people you wouldn’t have likely reached otherwise.
