I’m starting a new series called “How Do I Get More”. I’m anticipating a four-part series, but we’ll see what happens! Today’s How Do I Get More post is: How Do I Get More Twitter Followers.
The answer is surprisingly easy. Twitter followers come in droves when:
1. You post interesting content.
This doesn’t have to be unique content. It’s fine to just curate the content around Twitter. But what you deliver has to be interesting to the people you want following you – to your target market. If you find yourself frequently wanting to post things that aren’t right for your followers, create a second twitter account. Have one for business and one for your personal connections. But don’t stop posting things about your personal life completely; your followers want to get to know you so they can understand more about your art.
The other side of this interesting content thing is being careful about promotion. People don’t want to follow you if they notice all you post about is your products. So instead, follow my favorite 80/20 rule. Post 20% of your stuff, 80% everything else. The 80% includes posts from other blogs, other people’s art, questions to your followers, @mentions to other tweeters, and similar things that don’t promote what you offer.
2. You follow others.
Don’t go crazy here. You don’t want to follow people for no reason. But follow people who might be interested in you and people who you’re interested in. Those people may or may not follow you back (for me it’s around a 40% follow back rate). BUT, every time I follow someone, someone else sees me pop up as a suggestion somewhere and I get a follow. Not from the person I followed, but from someone different. And that’s awesome too, right?
3. You let people know you exist.
Post your twitter link in places your people hang out. Let people know you’re there. Exposure will turn into followers as long as you are following #1.
That’s it! Those three rules will get you more followers the right way. No gimmicks. Just real people who really want to hear what you’ve got to say.
