I snagged some time with Kathleen Shannon, a creative business strategist and total branding expert, for a great interview about a host of things – picking a target market, branding, and blending (or not blending) your personal and professional life were just a few of the topics.
Kathleen is a blast to talk to – but I guess I wouldn’t expect anything less from such a cool woman – she documents in detail what she’s experiencing during her pregnancy (including bizarre dreams at night) on her personal blog and her hair is in the most chic dreadlocks I’ve ever seen.
Kathleen and her sister, Tara, have a ton to teach you over at Braid. When you click on over, you’ll notice you can sign up on the left side to get their emails. You don’t want to miss them.
I don’t let just everyone’s emails in my inbox. In fact, I unsubscribe from big names sometimes if they promote too much, get boring, or start acting like they own the world. I let Kathleen and Tara grace my inbox because they’re post are actionable, inspiring, and humble.
I’d love to know in the comments below what hit home from Kathleen’s interview or what you’re still struggling with.
This week I interviewed Joyce M. Washington, CPA and virtual CFO (certified public accountant and virtual chief financial officer) and founder of The Common Cents. We talked about taxes, keeping track of finances, pricing art, and a ton of other stuff that Joyce has a way of making simple and stress-free. Click play to stop stressing out about money and taxes once and for all!
Joyce has so much more to teach creative types about the money in their businesses. If you pop over to Joyce’s site, you can get the free guide to Perfect Pricing and check out her blog with tons of information on the scary financial stuff explained with Joyce’s easy manner. So much better!
I’d love to know in the comments below what financial problems you’ve had in your business and which tip from the interview made you go “ohhhhhh… now I get it!”

I had a lot of fun making this video with Amy Tan of The Treespace Studio, who previously wrote about storytelling in your business here on this blog. In the interview, Amy and I talked every which way around branding an artistic business. She taught a lot about creating a full experience for your customers like I’ve written about here on the blog twice so far. Click play to hear her interesting perspective on the topic and a REALLY relatable metaphor to help you get there.
If you like Amy as much as I do, pop over to her website and take a peek at her amazing branding and the ways she can help you wrestle your own branding into a cohesive experience. While you’re there, grab a spot at The Sticky Brand Workshop for free so you can stop hiding and start selling in major retailers like Anthropologie or Whole Foods.
I’d love to know in the comments below the thing that most resonated with you from today’s interview or what experiences you’ve had in branding your business.
