I talk a lot about putting aside the creative side of yourself that’s a little more… um, let’s just say “in touch with your emotions”. And that will really do wonders for your business sense. But, when it comes down to it, you’ll be happier if your big decisions revolve around your heart, not your head.
I caught up with a textiles-major friend of mine the other day. She’s graduating in a couple weeks and has been wrapped up in applications and interviews, hoping to be one of the lucky few that actually lands a job. She was incredibly excited to tell me that she got three offers! Since she was in a position to be a little choosy, she immediately eliminated the one that was barely in her field.
She was left with two options, a paid internship with no assurance of a permanent position and a well-paid full-time position. But the catch was that the internship would have her doing just about everything she wanted to do and the full-time didn’t sound nearly as enjoyable. Lots of people told her to take this opportunity to get a big paycheck and save some money, but lucky her – her parents told her to take the risk while she had nothing to lose.
And that reminded me how important it is for us to choose something that will make us happy. We all have responsibilities, but sacrificing (where reasonably possible) for our passions will leave us remarkably happy in life. Just to be clear, please don’t go quit your job when you’re the sole supporter of three children. Your responsibilities still matter. You still have big decisions to make. Just make them with some confidence that your gut is telling you where to go for a reason.
So I have a challenge for you.
Next week, I want you to pay attention when you make choices. Choose at least one thing to do simply because your heart is pulling you. This could be buying that dress you think probably makes your legs look short or it could be deciding to finally quit your day job. Or anything in between.
CAUTION: This is addictive behavior.
Report back to me about your heart-based decision in the comments!
